Know the Signs of Pregnancy

Not every pregnant woman will experience the usual symptoms. Additionally, some symptoms can indicate other health conditions, and irregular cycles can make knowing when to take a test more difficult.

However, these are signs to look for if you think you’re pregnant:

  • Missed period
  • Nausea (with or without vomiting)
  • Tender, swollen breasts
  • Increased urination
  • Fatigue
  • Bloating
  • Cramping
  • Constipation
  • Nasal congestion
  • Food aversions
  • Moodiness

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms or have had sexual intercourse, taking a test can provide that first moment of clarity.

The Mayo Clinic recommends waiting at least one to two days after a missed period to take a pregnancy test. That’s because hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) levels rise quickly during those initial weeks of pregnancy, and waiting until after your missed period improves your chances of receiving an accurate result.

This hormone is present in your body during pregnancy and rises quickly, doubling every two to three days. Its levels are most concentrated in your first-morning urine, so taking the test when you wake up can also help ensure a more reliable result.

Home pregnancy tests are available at grocery stores and pharmacies and are generally accurate if the instructions are followed. However, false-negative results can occur. And if you receive a positive test, it is a good idea to follow up with a medical-grade test for accuracy.
